Research Leads to Best Windows Plus Unexpected Bonus

Only a few years after moving into a four year old house, homeowners Chris and Connie A. were faced with failures and rot in their wood windows. They made multiple attempts to replace seals and other parts and always had difficulty finding someone to do the work. Overall, fixing and maintaining their windows was expensive and time-consuming.

Project Highlights

• Chris spent a considerable amount of time researching window manufacturers before settling on Marvin. He was impressed with the components and general sturdiness of Marvin’s products.
• To eliminate the “busy” look of the old windows, the grille pattern was changed. One original window had a grid 7 lites wide by 7 lites tall totaling 49 lites. That window was changed to a 5×5 grid totaling 25 lites, significantly “de-cluttering” the look of the window. When applied to the entire house, this design recommendation brought improved proportion to the home.
• To reduce maintenance requirements, the homeowners selected a clad-wood product that featured an extruded aluminum exterior factory-finished in commercial-grade paint for superior resistance to fading and chalking.
• Ann and her team developed an installation procedure for the large project – 48 windows, 19 window transoms and one patio door – that would not disturb the custom woodwork around the existing windows and that allowed the installation team to work around a patio arbor built in front of a large bank of windows.

Results

The install was scheduled for January and the homeowners feared the worst with visions of their home wide open to the winter weather. Instead, they received an unexpected bonus. Chris explains, “I was preparing for a bump in my heating bill, but Ann assured us that the installation crew would work on one opening at a time to minimize weather impact. The crew did an absolutely tremendous job! We were pleasantly surprised at how clean and organized they were. They completed all their scheduled tasks before they left each day and any furniture that was moved was replaced.”

The new Marvin windows and doors are a considerable source of pride for the homeowners as their research continues to pay dividends in comfort, beauty and energy efficiency.
