Are you experienced with window replacement?
Your first consideration should be to choose a certified replacement window installer. This means the team has had extensive product and installation training, including years of experience installing windows. Certified installers specialize in replacing windows, and can problem solve should issues arise. Those who specialize in window installation also have the trucks and all the tools and supplies needed for window projects. And, are well versed in the processes that ensure your windows work properly.
What benefits will your new windows offer me?
New windows should bring many benefits to your home. But those benefits vary based on the types of window, materials and options you choose. For example, casement and awning windows pull into their weatherstripping. They seal tighter and are more energy efficient than windows that slide like single or double hung windows or sliding windows.
That’s just one benefit your consultant can help with. Once you tell them your priorities they should be able to put a window package together for you that meets your specific needs including: better security, long term energy savings and increased sound suppression.
Are your windows energy efficient?
Here is how windows are rated for efficiency:
Every window has numeric energy efficiency ratings assigned to it by oversight agencies.
The best-known of these is the ENERGY STAR program run by the US EPA and the Department of Energy and verified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). Windows are tested and rated according to two measures: tThe U-Factor and the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The U-Factor tells you how well the window keeps heat indoors. The ratings range from 0.20 to 1.20. The lower the number the better, especially in Northern Climates.
The SHGC describes how well the window keeps heat out. It ranges from 0 to 1, with lower numbers indicating higher efficiency. It is more important in Southern climates. So regionality plus the U-Factor and SHGC determine if a window earns an ENERGY STAR sticker.
The NFRC rating label is perhaps a more instructive guide for choosing a window because it reveals the U-Factor and NFRC metrics, along with a couple of others, which allows you to make one-to-one comparisons of the energy efficiency of windows you are considering.

What Makes A Window Energy Efficient?
How long will this take from ordering my replacement windows to installation?
There are a lot of moving parts to the window purchase and installation process, so there are a lot of questions.
- Once you have made your decision and made the down payment, how long will this entire process take?
- Do the windows need to be manufactured or are they already made?
- How long will manufacturing and delivery take?
- Is there a possibility of delays in materials or delivery?
- When the product is received, will I be on the installation schedule immediately?
- How long will installation take?
- What if there is bad weather?
The answers will vary among dealers and depend on the product you order and its complexity and customization, the manufacturer and its location, demand, and many other factors.
What do you do to ensure my home is protected during installation?
The window replacement process involves construction to the exterior and interior of your home. It is essential to know the company you hire respects your property and belongings and leaves your home clean. Ask them what their process is when they arrive on site to prepare your house for installation.
Do they cover your furniture and flooring inside?
Do they protect your landscaping?
Do they have special provisions for lead paint in older homes?
Once the job is complete, what is their process for clean-up? What happens to the loose paint, dirt and debris that is stirred up during the replacement process? Am I responsible for cleaning?

Clean Up After An Installation
If the company installs in inclement weather what precautions do they take to mitigate heat loss or water infiltration?
What do I need to do to prepare for my window installation?
You will also want to do your part to ensure your window installation team has the space they need to do their jobs. They will need access to all the windows around your home so you will want to make sure you do the following:
Remove window treatments: curtains, blinds, etc.
Move furniture away from windows and closer to the center of the room.
Move your treasured art, pictures, and knick-knacks out of the construction zone.
Keep pets and kids at a safe distance. This protects your most cherished possessions – your loved ones – and the installers who are carry heavy windows for your home.

With Window Treatments Removed, Installers Can Access Work Space
Do you offer warranties? Who do I call if I have a problem?
What kind of window warranty does the manufacturer offer? Does this cover all of the parts? Frame, glass, hardware?
Is there an installation warranty? What does it cover?
Who will provide service should I have an issue?
Are these warranties transferable should I sell my house?
Make sure that the windows you are purchasing have a strong materials and installation warranty and that your window partner stands by their products and service.
Will there be any other fees for this project?
Make sure you get a detailed quote that includes everything needed to get the job done. To ensure there are no unexpected costs you may want to ask:
Will you remove and dispose of the old windows, window frames and frame materials?
Will this quote cover any permits that may be required by the city/neighborhood?
Do your windows offer any (important) features?
This is where you get to decide what is important. If you hate to go outside to wash your windows, you may want windows that tilt in for easy cleaning. Perhaps security is a concern of yours, you may want to know about special hardware or stronger frame material. Make sure your windows offer the specifications you want.
Do you have references and photos of past projects?
Do some online research. Check reviews on social media, Google, or review sites. Ask for references from customers who are happy. Better yet, ask for a reference from a customer who had an issue. That way you can learn how the company you are working with solves problems.
