Door Store and Windows (TDSW) is proud to announce that they are a 2018 Better Business Bureau (BBB) Torch Award winner in the small business category. The BBB Torch Awards recognize businesses and non-profits in small, medium and large categories for their exceptional ethical practices.

TDSW takes great pride in their attention to ethical practices. Discover Louisville’s Hidden Treasures

Most locals know that Old Louisville is full of fantastic architecture and beautiful older homes. What many may not know is that there are some of the most beautiful private gardens in this area as well. This weekend you are able to tour several of these incredible gardens and outdoor spaces in The 25th Annual Old Louisville Hidden Treasures Garden Tour. One of our passions is helping to preserve, protect and refresh our area’s historic homes. All proceeds from this event will be used to preserve and improve this historic area in our community and we are thrilled to be a part of the event! 

As a special treat, four of the gardens open this year have never before been open to the public! The entire route is walkable, and begins at the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum where you will find vendor tables, auctions and other items nearby. We hear that a few of the carriage houses will also be open for tours. 

Worried about getting over heated? We’ve got you covered! This year The Door Store and Windows are the event “Fan Sponsors”, which means we are contributing a hand fan. This fan is your ticket into each garden. You’ll want to hold onto it, because it will also offer free admission to the Conrad-Caldwell Museum at a later date.

Dogs Helping Heroes Promotion

As a token of our gratitude for those who have served in our Nation’s Armed Forces we are donating $11 from the sale of each window or door through June 30 to Dogs Helping Heroes. 

Dogs Helping Heroes is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to helping our wounded heroes and the families of those who have been lost in service to our Nation. The organization was born when a professional dog trainer, David Bernson, noticed how much a service dog was helping his brother-in-law, a wounded veteran, live a fulfilling life. Today they rescue dogs from shelters, train them as service animals, and place them with wounded military and first responders. The mission of this organization is to improve their lives, as well as to help Gold Star Families cope with their losses.

Memorial Day Hours

Our country is blessed with able bodied men and women who answer the call to serve and defend our land and freedoms. Memorial Day is a day for us to remember those who have died in our country’s service. So many have served, many have died and many have returned, but few unscathed by their experiences. We give thanks to them all.

To give our team time with their families to remember their loved ones who have served, we will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday May 28 and will reopen at 9:00 Tuesday morning.

Rules of Proportion and Scale For Windows and Doors

Have you ever seen a home with windows or an entry door that just didn’t look right? We see them all the time and offer design assistance to help homeowners understand the importance of proportion and scale when it comes to replacing their windows or entry doors. We don’t just plug one of our products into an opening…we evaluate the relationship of the window or door to the overall architecture and how we can stay true to the architectural integrity or even improve the overall look of the home.

Here’s a quick primer on how proportion and scale impacts your windows and doors.

Window Grids

These “before and after” photos show how selecting the correct grid size can have an overall impact on the proportion and scale of the windows to the home. Our designer suggested a move toward a more open look with larger grid pattern to provide larger daylight openings. Compare the grid patterns on the before and after homes. Notice how “busy” the original windows look when compared to the larger grid used on the replacement windows. (Click image to enlarge)

Here’s another example of how changing window grid sizes creates a cleaner and simpler look to better match the scale and proportions of a home. Not only did the grid sizes differ in the original upper and lower windows, but the lower window grid lines didn’t even line up to the upper window grid lines.

Door Styles

Sometimes the door style should be changed due to proportions of the opening. For instance, the door shown below was changed from a standard height door with two sidelites and a large transom over the door to a taller, double-door configuration with less transom area. The new door was sized to allow a simple half circle transom rather than the odd-sized transom on the original door. The door and transom size change “stretches” the look of the entryway to make it less intimidating and more pleasing to the eye. (Click image to enlarge)

Here’s a situation where the original double doors are not in scale with the home. The doors seem to be squeezed into the opening. Without changing the size of the opening, we suggested a single door with two sidelites to better suit the low ceiling height of the porch. (Click image to enlarge)

Why Replacing Your Windows In Stages Might Make Sense

Replacing a house full of windows sounds like a daunting task, right? Great news – it does not have to be! Quite often we meet homeowners who know they need to replace most if not every single window in their home. However, they are not ready to tackle such a large project all at once. Or, they know the project will be more than this year’s budget. Or, just maybe, this first time purchase is scary and the homeowners want to test the waters – see if they like the product and the installing contractor.

It’s Smart To Replace Your Windows A Few At A Time.

Regardless the reason, it is okay to change out your windows over several years. You do not have to compromise. Buying windows for your home is a big investment and you don’t have to make the investment all at once.

Here’s How It’s Done

One recent project shows how replacing windows in stages can be more manageable for your nerves and your budget. These homeowners found extensive rot and general loss of function for many of their windows and wanted to replace them with energy-efficient models that offered key features for their lifestyle. The 1926 home included 42 windows and was a perfect candidate for replacement in stages to meet the homeowners’ feature and budget needs. They added a touch of architectural style by replacing the original 6 over 6 grille design with a 3 over 1 design.

MONEY SAVING TIP: If you purchase five to eight windows at a time, your window dealer can offer you the best price on installation because their team is fully employed for the day. Also, the right designer/consultant/retail dealer can offer suggestions on window designs that can maintain the architectural integrity of your home and also save money – not all windows have to be re-created exactly as they were.

Now For The Big Question: Which Windows To Do First?

How do you know which windows to replace first? In this case, the decision was based on a combination of regaining functionality and retaining proper aesthetics. The original kitchen windows were difficult to open and close, so adding functional windows to this part of the home was important. In addition, the homeowners decided to replace all the windows on the kitchen side of their home to avoid a potential mismatched look from the change in grille pattern. Insert windows were used to avoid disturbing the original interior trim. The results are impressive. Even with the grille changes, the new windows look like they had always been part of the charming home’s architecture. And the homeowners were thrilled to get exactly the windows they wanted for their home within a budget they could manage.

Follow your wishes. Do not compromise for cost or time, because as you can see, both are negotiable! If you are ready, jump right in and replace all of your windows.
