Food Pantry Collection at the Door Store and Windows

Door Store and Windows is proud to be supporting the efforts of a local institution, Redeemer Lutheran Church. Redeemer Lutheran has been located on

River Park Drive in the Shawnee neighborhood since the 1950s and has a robust community ministry program. In addition to offering a yearly community street and health fair, an annual giveaway of warm clothing, and offering monthly HIV testing through the Health Department, Redeemer Lutheran also operates a Food Pantry.

On the fourth Wednesday of each month, the church Food Pantry is open from 8:00am to 11:00am. Volunteers distribute bags of food to about 150 families, with each bag containing enough food for about six meals. Over the course of one year, the Food Pantry may distribute tens of thousands of meals to community members.

This year, Door Store and Windows wanted to be even more hands-on and involved with the great work that Redeemer is doing in the community. From November through January, our wonderful staff will be volunteering their time to the Food Pantry, and we will also be taking up food collection for upcoming pantries.

If you’d like to make a donation for January’s food bag, we are in need of:

  • Boxes of tissues
  • Cans of tuna

BEING BRAVE

Earlier this spring, our founders Ann and Laurie were interviewed by McKenzie Nalley for Louisville Builder Magazine. The topic? Being a woman in the building industry—an industry largely dominated by men. With 20 years of success and surviving a recession under their belts, the story is a noteworthy one, serving as inspiration for other women seeking to enter the industry.

Excerpt:

“If you had been there when Ann Gregory and her father started the business and asked her whether she and her sister Laurie Scarborough planned in 20 years’ time to be co-owners of one of the region’s most successful home outfitters, I’m certain she would have just laughed.

She probably would have laughed much harder than she did with me a few weeks back when I posed the same question. ‘No, we never planned anything,’ Ann chuckled. ‘We planned nothing. It all just kind of happened.’

A modest answer but one that belies the immense dedication and courage that keeps an operation like theirs alive…”

We Are the Proud Recipients of the 2018 Better Business Bureau Torch Award!

We are so excited and thankful to have recently won a 2018 Better Business Bureau Torch Award in the Small Business category! The BBB Torch Awards recognize businesses who follow a strict code of ethics in all lines of business creating an exemplary experience for customers, employees and partners.

Each of the beautiful BBB Torch Awards displayed before the ceremony.

We strive to be 100% transparent and honest with our customers and everyone we work with. We do this by creating outstanding customer experiences using quality products and proven installation techniques and offering superior knowledge and service. This has been our mission all along and with the help of our employees we developed complimentary core values found here that represent TDSW perfectly. We felt it important to give our employees a say in the values they are required to adhere to and help us paint a more complete picture of what our company is really all about. A list of these values is placed in our showroom, on each employee’s desk and in each installation vehicle. Following this mission and adhering to these core values allows us to conduct business as ethically as possible. It’s this mission and value statement along with a review of other business practices that earned us this prestigious award.

Our employees are proud to work for a company where they feel heard and respected, selling a product and service they believe in.

“The BBB Torch award is so meaningful because we pride ourselves on providing outstanding customer experiences,” says Karen Lamontagne, a member of the TDSW sales team. “Our team truly cares in finding the right solution for your home and this award shows our dedication and commitment to being the best.”

This employee pride translates seamlessly into customer service and satisfaction in all aspects of business. From the beginning stages of the process to installation of product, our team is ready to help every step of the way. Our employees work directly with customers, sometimes in customers’ homes. It is imperative that they feel comfortable with our team.

“Door Store and Windows excels in transparency, customer service, and respect,” says Christine Jones, a TDSW replacement and installation customer. “Craig Rowe, the install manager who measured and worked with us on design, got everything right, to the millimeter. The windows fit perfectly. The install team that did the job, led by Steve Hudson, was first rate. They were clean, efficient, and detailed. The install team were respectful and worked so well together they seemed choreographed. The install happened on or even ahead of schedule. Laurie Scarborough, one of the owners of the company, even came by during the process. Every person involved in this organization is at the top of their game. What’s more, the windows and install were so good, we will likely never need TDSW again, which makes the customer service that much more impressive. TDSW is doing it right for Louisville and I recommend them highly.”

Keynote speaker, Scott Davenport.

Thank you to our employees for their hard work and dedication which helped to earn us this honor, and thank you to our community for trusting us as Louisville’s window and door experts!

Door Store and Windows Named 2018 Better Business Bureau Torch Award Winner

Door Store and Windows (TDSW) is proud to announce that they are a 2018 Better Business Bureau (BBB) Torch Award winner in the small business category. The BBB Torch Awards recognize businesses and non-profits in small, medium and large categories for their exceptional ethical practices.

TDSW takes great pride in their attention to ethical practices. Efforts to be transparent include a clear mission statement, posters and placards featuring their seven core values placed around the showroom, extensive employee screening, and much more. It is important to TDSW to be completely transparent and honest with their customers.

“We had surrounded ourselves with teammates we trusted, who represented our business with the same attitude, dedication and behaviors as ourselves,” TDSW Co-Owner, Laurie Scharborough says. “It became time to codify our values and our entire company spent two half-day sessions brainstorming and developing our seven core values.”

TDSW strives to create an outstanding customer experience creating a beautiful, comfortable space using quality products and proven installation techniques.

“The Golden Rule – treat others as you want to be treated – is fundamental to our code. We often talk about being proud to sell to close friends and family,” TDSW Co-Owner, Ann Gregory says. “We are eager to ask about the TDSW project, because regardless of the answer, we know we will do what it takes to make the project right.”

The Louisville community is proud to support TDSW knowing they will always receive the highest quality service and products.

“This company excels in transparency, customer service and respect,” Christine Jones, TDSW customer says. “Immediately it struck me that you only get this level of workmanship out of people when they love where they work. I asked, they do. That matters a lot to me as a customer.”

TDSW will be recognized as a 2018 Torch Award winner at the 2018 BBB Torch Awards Luncheon on Thursday, November 1, 2018, noon – 2pm at The Olmstead.

Discover Louisville’s Hidden Treasures

Most locals know that Old Louisville is full of fantastic architecture and beautiful older homes. What many may not know is that there are some of the most beautiful private gardens in this area as well. This weekend you are able to tour several of these incredible gardens and outdoor spaces in The 25th Annual Old Louisville Hidden Treasures Garden Tour. One of our passions is helping to preserve, protect and refresh our area’s historic homes. All proceeds from this event will be used to preserve and improve this historic area in our community and we are thrilled to be a part of the event!

As a special treat, four of the gardens open this year have never before been open to the public! The entire route is walkable, and begins at the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum where you will find vendor tables, auctions and other items nearby. We hear that a few of the carriage houses will also be open for tours.

Worried about getting over heated? We’ve got you covered! This year The Door Store and Windows are the event “Fan Sponsors”, which means we are contributing a hand fan. This fan is your ticket into each garden. You’ll want to hold onto it, because it will also offer free admission to the Conrad-Caldwell Museum at a later date.

Dogs Helping Heroes Promotion

As a token of our gratitude for those who have served in our Nation’s Armed Forces we are donating $11 from the sale of each window or door through June 30 to Dogs Helping Heroes.

Dogs Helping Heroes is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to helping our wounded heroes and the families of those who have been lost in service to our Nation. The organization was born when a professional dog trainer, David Bernson, noticed how much a service dog was helping his brother-in-law, a wounded veteran, live a fulfilling life. Today they rescue dogs from shelters, train them as service animals, and place them with wounded military and first responders. The mission of this organization is to improve their lives, as well as to help Gold Star Families cope with their losses.

We are proud to help this Louisville based organization! Read more at the link about Dogs Helping Heroes, or how you too can help this incredible group.

Memorial Day Hours

Our country is blessed with able bodied men and women who answer the call to serve and defend our land and freedoms. Memorial Day is a day for us to remember those who have died in our country’s service. So many have served, many have died and many have returned, but few unscathed by their experiences. We give thanks to them all.

To give our team time with their families to remember their loved ones who have served, we will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday May 28 and will reopen at 9:00 Tuesday morning.

Rules of Proportion and Scale For Windows and Doors

Have you ever seen a home with windows or an entry door that just didn’t look right? We see them all the time and offer design assistance to help homeowners understand the importance of proportion and scale when it comes to replacing their windows or entry doors. We don’t just plug one of our products into an opening…we evaluate the relationship of the window or door to the overall architecture and how we can stay true to the architectural integrity or even improve the overall look of the home.

Here’s a quick primer on how proportion and scale impacts your windows and doors.

Window Grids

These “before and after” photos show how selecting the correct grid size can have an overall impact on the proportion and scale of the windows to the home. Our designer suggested a move toward a more open look with larger grid pattern to provide larger daylight openings. Compare the grid patterns on the before and after homes. Notice how “busy” the original windows look when compared to the larger grid used on the replacement windows. (Click image to enlarge)

Here’s another example of how changing window grid sizes creates a cleaner and simpler look to better match the scale and proportions of a home. Not only did the grid sizes differ in the original upper and lower windows, but the lower window grid lines didn’t even line up to the upper window grid lines.

Door Styles

Sometimes the door style should be changed due to proportions of the opening. For instance, the door shown below was changed from a standard height door with two sidelites and a large transom over the door to a taller, double-door configuration with less transom area. The new door was sized to allow a simple half circle transom rather than the odd-sized transom on the original door. The door and transom size change “stretches” the look of the entryway to make it less intimidating and more pleasing to the eye. (Click image to enlarge)

Here’s a situation where the original double doors are not in scale with the home. The doors seem to be squeezed into the opening. Without changing the size of the opening, we suggested a single door with two sidelites to better suit the low ceiling height of the porch. (Click image to enlarge)

If you have a project that needs a good design eye, give us a call. One of our design consultants will visit your home and provide design opinions on how you can achieve the windows or doors of your dreams. Give us a call at 502-896-1717 to get started today.
